Tour of Clarksville
Pre-History
In early colonial days, the area was the "capital" of the Siouan nations of the Piedmont. (Some say the western Sioux originated here.) The first national highway of the nation, Highway One, was built upon the Great Trading Path which passed through here.

"Clarksville Point" |
The Occoneechee held power on an island, now inundated, which lay at the feet of present-day Clarksville. They controlled trade in a 500-mile radius but were massacred in 1676 at the hands of the rebel, Bacon, a failed trader himself. This opened the piedmont to colonial settlement. A museum telling their tale lies within Occoneechee State Park, which sits on the opposite bank of the lake from Clarksville.
